Victoria Spivey - born 1906 in Houston Texas, Spivey was one of the earliest known professional blues singers and songwriters. In 1918, she left home to work as a pianist at the Lincoln Theater in Dallas and she began her recording career at age 19 . In the early 1920s, she played in gambling parlors, gay hangouts, and whorehouses in Galveston and Houston is well known during this period for her many recordings with Blind Lemon Jefferson. During a recording career that spanned 40 years, from 1926 to the mid-1960s, she worked with numerous artists including Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Luis Russell, Lonnie Johnson, Tampa Red, and Bob Dylan.
